Rhythm essentials

Learn the building blocks of rhythm so the exercises feel more natural.

Time signatures

Time signatures tell you how many beats are in each measure and which note value gets the beat.

Common examples:
  • 4/4 Four quarter-note beats per measure. Often counted 1-2-3-4.
  • 3/4 Three quarter-note beats per measure. Often counted 1-2-3.

Note values

Rhythm is built from note lengths. Each note value divides the beat in a different way.

  • Quarter notes: one beat.
  • Half notes: two beats.
  • Eighth notes: half a beat.
  • Sixteenth notes: quarter of a beat.

Rests are silences of the same lengths.

Sample patterns

Try clapping or speaking these simple patterns:

4/4: ta ta ta ta
4/4: ta - ta ta
3/4: ta ta ta
3/4: ta - ta

Practice tip

Use a steady count-in and feel the pulse before you record. Consistent timing matters more than pitch here.
